Reading the news or browsing through your social feed on any single day can be scary. There always seems to be a new article regarding weight loss medications. “Ozempic butt”, “Ozempic face”, “Ozempic breast”, “Ozempic hair loss” and the newest headline, “Ozempic baby.” These headlines are intentionally used to grab your attention. Don’t let these terms scare you. These are not side effects or complications of the medication; they are side effects of losing weight and becoming healthier. When you lose weight, you will lose fat mass and muscle mass, contour is lost, and skin will sag.

It would be wonderful to be able to dictate “lose fat here, but not there.” Sadly, you can’t.

Losing fat mass and muscle mass will happen all over the body. It doesn’t matter how you lose the weight – diet and exercise alone, weight loss surgery, or weight loss medications. It happens with slow weight loss and fast weight loss. When you lose weight, your face will be thinner, you may have loose skin on your thighs, and yes, you will need smaller shirts/pants/underwear/bras/belts/shoes. You name it, it will be smaller.  At the same time, your LDL or bad cholesterol will be lower, your visceral (or abdominal) fat will be smaller and your risk of heart attack/stroke/death will be less. Isn’t that great?  Only you can say if the tradeoffs are worth it.

Don’t let these attention-grabbing headlines scare you. Ask yourself why you want to lose weight. Vanity? Health? A little bit of both? It’s always scary to start on a new journey, especially one such as weight loss. Talk to your doctor about your fears. The right team with the right doctor will answer all your questions, give you all the time you need, give you all the education you need, so you’ll feel comfortable with your treatment plan including starting any new medications. Don’t let fear stop you from losing weight and becoming healthier.
